The Capture Tab

Capture with purpose. Every photo knows where it belongs.

How Capture Works

Three steps from shutter to organized.

1

Choose Your Intent

Tap what you're capturing: Receipt, Calories, Contact, or any of the 14 intents. This tells the app how to process and file it.

2

Take the Photo

Capture directly to iCloud Drive. It never touches your Camera Roll. On-device AI kicks in instantly.

3

Instant Processing

Text is extracted, barcodes decoded, content classified. If Auto-AI is on, generative analysis runs too. Photo auto-files to the right folder.

The Capture Screen

Choose your capture intent. Each button tells the app what you're photographing.

14 Capture Intents

Each intent determines what gets extracted, what AI analyzes, and which folder receives the photo. Audio is a mode toggle, not an intent — record any of these as audio with the Record toggle.

Task → Tasks folder

Capture something you need to act on. A whiteboard, a note, a to-do list.

Free (On-Device)
Full text extracted. Barcodes and QR codes decoded. Content classified and auto-tagged.
With AI Credit
Actionable task summary with priority, next steps, and suggested due date.
🌐

Translate → Translate folder

Snap signs, menus, labels, or documents in any language. Foreign text is translated with narrative context — not just words, but meaning.

Free (On-Device)
Full text extracted with no character limit. Barcodes and QR codes decoded. On-device language detection.
With AI Credit
Narrative translation with cultural context — menus explained with dish descriptions, signs with meaning, instructions with practical notes.
🧾

Receipt → Receipt folder

Capture receipts and invoices. Get structured data ready to file or expense.

Free (On-Device)
Full text extracted. Barcodes decoded (loyalty cards, transaction IDs).
With AI Credit
Vendor name, date, total, tax, and line items structured and ready to expense.
🍽

Calories → Calories folder

Snap your meal for instant nutrition estimation. No manual food database entry. Tapping Calories opens a chooser before the camera: Snap (straight to camera), Describe (a note first, then shoot), or Has / Not (tap ingredient pills, then shoot). Once you have saved a meal, a fourth button, Saved, logs it in one tap, no photo needed.

Free (On-Device)
Classified as food. Text extracted from menus or nutrition labels if present. Saved foods log with no credit.
With AI Credit
Dish identified with estimated calories, carbs, and protein. Ingredient and allergen notes. Correct the portion in the follow-up chat and the numbers update in place.

Full calorie tracking guide →

What is it? → Identify folder

Snap anything you can't identify. Plants, vehicles, electronics, antiques, art.

Free (On-Device)
Generic classification labels (e.g. "animal," "vehicle"). Barcodes and QR codes decoded.
With AI Credit
Specific identification — make, model, species, variety. Value estimate where applicable.
🔬

Explain → Explain folder

Decode test results, reports, and jargon. Get plain-language explanations.

Free (On-Device)
Full text extracted. Foreign text auto-translated on-device. Barcodes decoded.
With AI Credit
Plain-language explanation with context. Cultural notes. What it means and what to do.
📊

Slide → Slides folder

Capture conference slides and whiteboards. Review key points later. Camera remembers your zoom level for consistent framing.

Free (On-Device)
Full text extracted from slide content. Content classified. Export all OCR text to clipboard.
With AI Credit
Quick Summary from OCR text, or Deep Summary that reads the actual slide images — charts, tables, and diagrams. Choose Brief or Comprehensive detail. Include same-day audio automatically.
📦

IDs & Docs → Essentials folder

Capture IDs, warranties, manuals, insurance cards — anything you need to look up later.

Free (On-Device)
Full text extracted. Barcodes decoded (serial numbers, product codes). Content classified.
With AI Credit
Structured details — model, specs, expiration dates, policy numbers, key terms organized.
💼

Contact → Contacts folder

Snap a business card. Extract contact info and share directly to Contacts.

🛡

Evidence → Evidence folder

Document damage, incidents, or conditions for insurance claims and legal disputes.

Free (On-Device)
Full text extracted. Content classified. Location and timestamp from capture.
With AI Credit
Detailed condition description — what's shown, what's damaged, environmental context.
🚲

Bike Fit → Bike Fit folder

Have someone snap you on the bike. Get a read on your riding position.

Free (On-Device)
Photo captured and classified.
With AI Credit
Saddle height, reach, and posture observations with suggested adjustments.
👕

Wardrobe → Wardrobe folder

Photograph your closet. Build outfits from what you actually own.

Free (On-Device)
Photo captured and classified.
With AI Credit
Each item tagged by category, color, season, and formality. Build Outfit, Outfit Check, Goes With, and wear tracking.
📚

Books → Books folder

Photograph a shelf and catalog every book on it. One shelf photo becomes one entry per spine, each cropped from the source photo, with the original shelf shot kept alongside. Wide shelves are uploaded at higher resolution so small spine text stays legible. Up to 30 books per photo.

Free (On-Device)
Photo captured and classified. After AI reads the spines, Open Library adds cover art, first-publish year, and subjects at no charge. Assign each book to the room it lives in and filter the folder by room.
With AI Credit
Title, author, series and volume, publisher, year, ISBN, format, genre, and language per spine. The reader never invents an ISBN or year it can't see. Pick which spines to save before anything is filed.
🍴

Menu → Menu folder

Snap a restaurant menu. Find the low-carb options before the server comes back.

Free (On-Device)
Full menu text extracted.
With AI Credit
Low-carb and keto-friendly picks with estimated macros.

Record: Audio As A Mode

Audio is no longer a separate tile. Pick any intent, then toggle Record to capture it as audio instead of a photo.

🎤 Record an intent

A Record toggle sits next to Auto-AI and Batch. Flip it on, choose your intent, and the next capture is an audio recording — not a photo. Recordings are transcribed on-device with WhisperKit. Nothing leaves your phone for transcription.

Recordings file to the Audio folder regardless of the chosen intent, but the original intent stays attached. Summarize a day of recordings the same way you summarize a day of slides.

Why this changed: capturing a meeting as a Task or a class as a Slide is more useful than treating audio as its own bucket. The intent describes the situation; the mode describes how you captured it.

Recording you can trust

Two timers, not one. While recording, the banner shows both the time actually captured and the time since you pressed record. If they drift apart, the difference is highlighted, so you know before the talk ends whether anything was missed.

The screen stays awake. The phone won't auto-lock mid-lecture.

Interruptions save what they can. If a phone call, Siri, or another audio app takes over, Unmuck saves everything captured up to that point and shows a banner with the exact duration it kept.

Clear about the limits. The first time you record, a short notice explains that Unmuck should stay open in the foreground while recording and what happens if it's interrupted.

Mode Toggles

Three toggles on the Capture screen customize your workflow.

Auto-AI

Automatically runs generative AI analysis after capture. Configured per intent — Calories, What is it?, Explain, Translate, Contact, Bike Fit, Wardrobe, Books, and Menu default to ON. Each intent remembers your preference independently. Uses one credit per analysis.

Batch Mode

Keeps you in the camera after each capture for rapid-fire shooting. Great for snapping 10 slides in a row, or multiple receipts. Analyze them all later from the Folders tab.

Record

Turns the next capture into an audio recording instead of a photo. Works with any intent. Transcribed on-device with WhisperKit — no internet, no AI credits required for transcription itself.

Built-In Editing

Crop Tool

Crop starts at full photo size so you can immediately drag to the area you want. No need to undo a default square crop first.

Zoom Memory

The camera remembers your zoom level per capture intent. Set it once for the projector distance and every Slide photo uses the same framing.

Widgets

Skip the app launcher. Unmuck ships Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets for capture, plus a family of nutrition widgets.

📱 Unmuck Capture (Home Screen, small)

Each widget is configured for one intent and one mode. Pick "Receipt · Photo" for the wallet, "Slide · Audio" for conferences, "Books · Photo" for the shelf you keep meaning to catalog. Tap the widget and the camera opens with that intent already selected. All 14 intents are available.

Set up multiple widgets, one per workflow. Stack them or put them in a Smart Stack so your most-used capture path is always one tap away.

Audio mode launches into recording immediately. Useful when something interesting is being said and you don't want to lose seconds finding the right tile.

Unmuck Multi-Capture (medium)

Two or three capture buttons in one wide widget, each with its own intent and mode. Receipt, Calories, and Task side by side, for example.

Lock Screen capture

Circular and rectangular Lock Screen widgets open the camera for a chosen intent without unlocking into the app first.

Calorie Capture (medium)

Three one-tap ways to log a meal: Snap (camera), Describe (note, then camera), Has / Not (ingredient pills, then camera). Each runs a single step and shoots.

Nutrition widgets

Today's Nutrition (Home Screen and Lock Screen) shows today's calories, carbs, and protein, plus burned and net when a burn source is on. Six 7-day chart widgets (bar or trend line for each of calories, carbs, and protein) in small and medium sizes. Details in the calorie guide →
